Are we the right example for the archetype of customers that would buy our solution?

When analyzing and defining our customer segments we have used an analogy with the character sheets in role-playing games, where we model each customer segment according to a pattern or archetype which includes not only quantitative data but also their "story" regarding the problem and their motivations to solve it. An important confusion may arise here if we ourselves are members of that segment and we base our model in our own characterization to extrapolate it to the whole segment, without asking ourselves this previous question: are we the right archetype for the customer segment we are modeling?

Including the time variable in Customer Development: from adventure to campaign

In previous blog entries dealing with the practice of Customer Development we focused on designing a value proposition answering the problems and needs of our potential customers, specifying the main features or our target segments and identifying examples of real people belonging to those segments, to be interviewed in order to validate our hypotheses. But, do these needs keep being the same over time? If we want our company or our products to adapt correctly we should keep an eye on the evolution of our customer segments, how their relationship with the problem we are trying to solve changes over time, and how new related problems may arise that, obviously, will need a solution too.

What's Customer Development got to do with Role-Playing Games?

Although this entry's title may sound weird at first, the truth is that when trying to explain some of the principles in Customer Development methodology or how to fill in the Customer Segments block in a Business Model Canvas, the process of setting up a Role-Playing Game provides us with a great analogy and, even if it may sound like a cliché, it can be a very useful resource for Computer Science students to learn how to use these tools.
